An Extension of a Museum
The project is an Extension of a museum, the first old part made of stone is a house for Habib-Basha el saad in Alaay Lebanon. We were asked to do an extension for this house to serve as a museum. My proposal was to do the new extension over the old house, suspended by pillars as shown in the picture. In this way i wont need to use the surrounding space of the house for building my new museum which will be used for landscape management.
Since it is a museum i didn’t want a lot of light to enter my museum which may affect the objects in it, so i made those spheres on the elevation to let the light penetrate effectively and dramatically. However, i chose to have the ground from glass to give importance for the old museum so people can look down, as it forms an introverted space.
The shape of the volume is based on taking the negative shape of the existing building , so if you combine (virtually) the two spaces it’ll form a square.
The steel structure as shown work as a continuous element from the old museum to the new one. The vertical (inclined) ones are interrelating with the horizontal one.
