LOCATION

Salgar Village, Puerto Salgar County, Atlántico Department. Colombia.

 

The Project, being a cable landing station, is situated near the touristic beach of Salgar, near Puerto Colombia. The place was chosen by the client due to its proximity to the sea.

DESCRIPTION

The building is a Cable Landing Station which purpose is to receive a sub-sea communications cable to redistribute data along the country and to other countries of the area; in that order, the facilities are designed to receive the cable and to install all of the necessary equipment intended to receive the cable’s signal, process it and transmit it according to the client’s needs.

The architectural program is developed on a three storey building:

 

  • The first (ground) floor hosts the reception, a water reserve and a cafeteria along with a fuel tank (for power plants) and the parking.
  • Second floor hosts all of the electrical facilities along with an office area for monitoring, third floor hosts technical and transmission racks along some electrical equipment and boards (this is to keep away sensible equipment from flooding).
  • The roof is a concrete deck designed to host the HVAC condensers and other technical equipment.

The functional concept is to give room enough for the building to “grow”, understanding this “growing” as the incremental quantity of racks and communication devices into the building for a wide range of service through the years.

The architectural concept (which is bounded to the function) consists of connecting the functions in such way that the electrical and data networks are very privileged for connecting power plants, electrical transformers and low tension transformers to all of the communication equipment, also, the data network must be linked to the sub-sea cable vault in order to optimize the cable’s route.

As power plants are huge and had to be in a “flooding free” area, they had to be located in the second floor to be mounted with a pull trolley.

On the outside the building is very rational, on the other hand, as sun incidence over the façades is very strong, a grid of teak wood came as tool to reduce direct sun’s radiance over the walls, which could result in a HVAC power consumption increase and condensation over the walls due to the abrupt thermal change on the exterior wall’s interior side. It helps a lot to improve the façade’s aesthetics as well.
